How to make a great logo?
What makes a great logo design? First of all what do we mean by a ‘great’ logo? Is it one you and your colleagues love? Is the fact that it is bold and brash, jumps out of the page and smacks you right between the eyes? Or is it that it is aesthetically pleasing, a work of art, an object of beauty? Perhaps it is witty, a clever visual pun, a trompe l’oeil or an optical illusion. Well it may be any, all or none of the above. Certainly the owners (including every member of staff and all the people who work with or use the brand) should appreciate its qualities and feel proud of it. But what really makes a great logo is that it answers the brief, it does its job, it is effective in achieving the goals that are its very purpose, its raison d’être. Unless its purpose has been carefully defined and specified it is unlikely to be a great logo because you simply can’t tell, there is nothing to measure it against. You may think it’s great but, truthfully, how do you really know?
Clear rationale
The task of defining the purpose of a logo is not easy and there is no ‘catch all’ process which will work for every logo design project because logos are used to badge just about every aspect of human endeavour from pop stars to star ships. Our logo design briefing form sets out to elicit some of the things we need to know and some of the things our clients need to think about. But each job is different and there is nothing to beat a conversation to discuss the requirements of a logo. For this reason we spend a fair amount of time on the telephone talking to our clients at the outset of a project. We also take care to explain our thinking behind the visuals we produce at each stage of the logo’s development. The rationale must be clearly understood by the client and the design team and development work should be tested against the original brief at each stage.
Listen to your designers
It is all too easy for the process to get sidetracked - or derailed even - by spurious comments and misguided interference. This is not to say that we do not listen or that we don’t value people’s opinions, we do. But it is also important to understand that design is a process, a process that our design team understands intimately. Time after time we have seen people waste enormous amounts of time and energy ‘going round the houses’ having yet more ideas and countless revisions, only to end up selecting one of the original concept offerings from stage 1. Beautifully crafted work gets totally ruined by clients insisting on messing it up! Why? ‘Nought so strange as folk’.
What’s value for money?
So how many concepts and how many revisions should you expect and what represents value for money. To be honest the whole business of so many concepts and so many revisions came from our competitors on the web, and we were in business doing this decades ago and doing on the web long before most of them. The answer is simple: if you are lucky, if the designer gets hit by a bolt of inspirational lightning and if your team (from your wife to your board) for once wholeheartedly agree with you, then the answer is one.
You decide
But coming down from La La Land into the real world, we have devised a number of packages at different price points to satisfy most small businesses and organisations. Which is right for you? Our experience tells us that the larger the number of decision makers the more involved and protracted the job and so the more the fee. If you put in the time devising the brief with us at the beginning and work closely with us as it takes shape, you will get a great logo which will help you to achieve great things. That’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? And, of course, if you want the full service: the market research, focus groups, analysis, brand audit, blah de blah de blah… no problem. We can adjust our fees no problem. Retainers are a bit of a wheeze apparently…
